The need for Mayne Island

The Southern Gulf Islands Housing Needs Assessment (Capital Regional District, February 2018) highlighted Mayne Island's urgent need for affordable and stable rental units, noting a 30% reduction in rental accommodation over the previous decade. A Renters Survey conducted by MIHS in June 2018 showed over 70% of renters pay more than 30% of their income in rent, with 25% facing significant risk of becoming unhoused.

Affordable Housing

Our work is centred around

Creating Opportunities

In response, MIHS is developing 10 units of purpose-built rental housing, proposing a project of mixed-rate homes for singles, couples, and families. The Society is seeking funding through provincial, federal and regional programs, while maintaining community engagement and building broad support for the housing initiative.
